Do you, as an employer, support volunteerism among your employees? As an employee, have you even asked your boss for time off to volunteer? And if you are self-employed, do you volunteer?
Forget everything you have read about your next job perhaps coming from your volunteer work. That may be the case but don't volunteer for that reason. Do it because the world needs volunteers. "Here she goes again," you may say. Well, perhaps, but you meet the nicest people and learn more outside your comfort zone when you volunteer.
The return on your investment of time pays in dividends that you can't calculate on a spreadsheet. If you are reading this, you are probably in the business world and are more fortunate that many people. You likely have a bit of extra time that you can share with others.
If you have decided to volunteer and don't know who needs your help, go to www.volunteer.ca and you can search by location, by type of activity, by the type of organization and more. Remember your community as well. There are often local groups that don't advertise the need for volunteers but if you speak to neighbours, you can get some leads.
Sure, it is easy to crash on the couch and eat popcorn and everyone needs to do that sometimes, but spend a little bit of time helping someone else and you will feel better for it.
