No one told me that running my own company would be easy. In fact, when I started Giraffe Graphics, few people I knew were self-employed so no one told me much of anything. I had a lot of learning and trial by error to make this business happen.
The blessing and the curse of my company is that the success and failure of it belongs to me. Being so invested in the company means I am front line all the time. I am the one selling myself and selling my business services. On the flip side however, I take pride in doing a good job for my clients. There is no procrastinating or prevaricating.
How hard are you willing to work to increase your luck? When you are the company, you should always be on the lookout for ways to tweak your business presence and services. Talk yourself up and remember to give back. It is not just the business side you will be known for; the humanist side is equally important I believe. Work hard at doing good and good things will happen. Is it karma? I don't know. I just know that if I am willing to work hard and work well, it comes back in a good way.
This is the season when people are starting to wind down for the holidays. Take the time, I say, to spend with family or friends. But use some of that time to research potential customers. What can you do for them that is different from anyone else. Try an industry that you have not worked in before. Just because the fit may not be obvious doesn't mean you can't make it work.
There's over two weeks left in the year so excuse me, I have to get to work.
