To use a sports analogy, when hitting the football past the goalpost, you’ve accomplished something good. Move the goalpost further away; strive for more. But what about mentally setting up several goalposts? Set a bunch of goals, knowing that you can’t possibly achieve them all. It will just make you try that much harder tomorrow or next week.
Incremental achievements can be very powerful. Your sense of achievement is reinforced each time, spurring you on. Try breaking your bigger goals down into components. Want 10 new clients? How about one new client a week? How about making five telephone calls to get that new client? How about just making a list of people to call? Don’t stress yourself too much about the single, massively large goal. Look at business success as a series of gradually increasing goals.
Sometimes I find it hard to keep going forward; just about everyone has that feeling. That is when you need your cheerleader to celebrate each goal on the field. That is when you need more than one goalpost.
