Not only am I in charge of design, I also have to market myself, pay the bills, train myself on software, network and read, read, read to keep up to date on what is happening in the industry. I would love to spend all of my time on the creative but I can’t. The problem, too, is that doing every routine part of my business some days sucks the creative juices right out of me.
Have you been there? Are you living that life right now? How do you keep going? Here’s what I do: I compartmentalize. I try to be fully in each part of my day while I am there. If I am doing the books, that is my task at hand. Rather than stop and pop over to the computer to try something new on InDesign, I force myself to concentrate on the business portion.
My business reading seldom gets done during the day because I had to make that decision early on. It is time I was willing to sacrifice to the other jobs I have to do. Ditto to keeping up with software updates.
So that is why my blog is being pumped out after 11:00 p.m. today. Although I am committed to providing an article every Monday, it sometimes gets pushed to the limit of the calendar day. I stopped beating myself up a while ago if I didn’t make the posting by 5:00 p.m., but I haven’t forgiven myself enough to let it go to another day. It is my deadline to my business, not to an outside client. It is no less important but today, I compartmentalized almost out of existence.
Let me know what methods you use.
