I opened up a Facebook account before this website was even live. LinkedIn followed, as did Twitter. However, my Facebook account was for keeping in touch with family and friends. Now I am finding that I am getting requests from cross-overs, people that I have met through business that want to be my Facebook friend.
Should I say no? Can I say no without offending people? It is a tricky business. Because I am a small shop, my clients come from everywhere – through business connections, through friends of friends, and even through neighbours.
Twitter and LinkedIn are my business “go-to” sites. For me, it is a no-brainer to make connections through them. I dither about Facebook, because I have personal connections. However, I have no “Karen being stupid” postings. I suppose that is my saving grace as I have always been circumspect about what I post.
So should I let everyone into my social media life? If I know them, I think the answer is “yes, why not”? After all, as long as I don’t embarrass myself online, then Facebook becomes another tool for connecting. And you can never have too many connections.
