I thought these books would be helpful and jumped in. One of them is called Do It! Let’s Get Off Our Buts. Written by John-Robert and Peter McWilliams, it wasn't new or earth-shaking, but it did inspire me. Through the sections about comfort zones, discovering and choosing your dreams and actually working towards them, I became motivated to make some changes in my life. One of the big achievements, for me, was actually submitting a short story for publication. I enjoy writing and have done so for many years. However, I had never gone as far as doing anything with my work. Never mind the fact that my work was rejected, the fact is, I actually went ahead and took a chance.
There are a lot of credible books out there (and a lot of worthless ones too, I might add). Different books work for different people because that is just how we are.
I checked out Wikipedia to find out if these two authors were still around. Sadly, both have passed away. John-Roger, I found out, was part of the New Age Spirituality movement. I didn’t know this when I read the book and at that point in my life it wouldn’t have mattered. I was open to any new ideas. Perhaps that is what made the book so impactful. I had nothing to measure it against and wasn’t jaded enough to dismiss it.
Sometimes inspiration comes from places you wouldn’t expect. I had never heard of these authors; I was just struck by the title. Once inside the covers however, it changed my life, albeit in a small way.
Maybe it is time to re-read it to see if I can once again be inspired.
