The work climate is so different now. Every day is casual Friday in many companies and you can’t tell the bosses from the employees. What now?
Well, first, you have to look at the subtext of the statement. It isn’t just the attire, but the attitude that goes with it. Do you want to advance in your company? Start thinking like a boss.
In a sense, you are dressing your attitude. Look beyond the “9 to 5, whoo hoo here comes the weekend!” If you can’t wait to get out the door, perhaps your current company isn’t the one in which you want to advance. On the other hand, maybe you are happy doing what you are doing. That is perfectly fine also.
I sometimes think there is too much emphasis on advancement, in that you “must” want to move to a better job, with more responsibility. Who says so? What works for one may not for another. Maybe your job is a means to an end to do the things you really want to do.
I love to travel. Does that mean a job with no ties and no responsibility so that I can take off whenever the desire strikes? I wish, but no, that isn’t for me because I can’t help myself. I take on more and more and even though I love to travel, that gets moved down the priority list in lieu of work.
If your yearning to travel is stronger, then take the job that will get you there, regardless of how you dress.
