When you are self-employed and are the only employee, you don’t get the dynamics of those around you for motivation. The approval of your clients when they have the completed project in hand may seem so far down the road that it is hard to keep yourself excited about the task.
How do you work around the lack of affirmation? I find the best way to keep motivated is to keep in touch with people who have similar businesses, or who work in similar fields for a larger company. Just because you work on your own doesn’t mean you don’t have the network to reach out to.
Even if you know the work you are doing is outstanding, it helps to have someone comment on a project partway through. Sometimes being too close to a project clouds your vision and you can easily miss an important point because you have been looking at it too long.
Working alone has its benefits and drawbacks but, just as no man is an island (thank you poet John Donne), never feel that you cannot reach out to others for that gold star.
