This week’s blog has ties to business, but also to the fallout of running a successful business and trying to balance it with the rest of your life. As much as we try not to let one interfere with the other, the reality is that everyone deals with the confluence of demands all the time. Why should we pretend it doesn’t exist?
Something has to give and realistically speaking, what can give is perfectionist state you have created outside of work. I have found that I try and impose the same perfectionist attitude on my family that I expect of myself and guess what – they are not me. I know, you are thinking “well, yeah – of course.” Some of you, though, are nodding your heads agreeing with me. You just assume everyone has the same attitude towards work (at home and office) that you do. It used to drive me crazy. Here is why it doesn’t anymore.
I have decided that, especially in December, for many things at home, good enough IS good enough. We couldn’t find all of our outdoor lights. We only had one string to put up. Okay, I decided. That was enough time. There are lights and it looks nice. It looks different from last year because it wasn’t as bright, but we had lights and that is good enough.
I enjoy baking and better yet for others, giving boxes of baking to people. Instead of twelve different kinds of treats, there will be about four. That, too, is good enough this year.
Once I allowed myself to accept that good enough WAS good enough, my anxiety level dropped. Work will get done, friends will be visited, people will be fed. It is easy to “settle” when you realize that you aren’t actually settling at all.
I hope that during this month, whatever your beliefs and practices, you will realize that good enough really is good enough.
