Guess what I was fretting about? Missing my Monday deadline, because I hadn’t prepared anything ahead of time. That is when I started thinking about the perils of being the one and only in your business.
When something unexpected happens, what do you do about deadlines and clients? What about billing for previous work to keep the money coming in? What about the prospecting? Luckily, I was only temporarily out of commission, but I realized that I don’t really have a backup plan.
Do you have a backup plan? My field is graphic design. I have friends who are similarly self-employed, but we haven’t got concrete plans in place in case one of us is faced with an unexpected emergency. Not too great for an entrepreneur huh?
So, even though the end of December is a ways off, I am already planning my single New Year’s resolution. Have a backup plan! Have people that can step in and keep your business going, because if your business goes under while you are dealing with the other “stuff”, what do you have to return to?
It isn’t too hard – mine your connections and see who you could work with to keep things afloat. It could be that they are looking for the same thing and haven’t made their plans either. Trust me, it is worth thinking about.
