Even if you didn’t make a lot of connections in your past job, it isn’t too late to make them now. Check out what people are doing on LinkedIn. Join their twitter feed. Send them an email about something you have in common. Sometimes I am surprised when people from a few jobs back want to join me on LinkedIn. I almost always say yes.
I love finding out what other people do, not necessarily because I want to mine their talents or contacts. I just find people fascinating and being a curious sort of person, am eager to find out about others’ skills and backgrounds.
Coffee, or tea, is a good ice-breaker if you are connecting or reconnecting. It doesn’t take a long time, but is just long enough to know if there are common interests. I like to say that “I don’t know who I know”, but often I can connect people who previously were unknown to each other. It’s a good feeling because after all, we are all in this together.
By the way, alumnus is a single male graduate; alumna the female counterpart. Alumni and alumnae are the male and female plural representations. You don’t have to remember it, as most of us wouldn’t know that either. Just remember to remember your past.
