The reason I didn’t ride yesterday is that it was predicted to be horribly hot, with rain. I thought I would leave it until today and work instead. Well, big surprise for me – the weather was actually not too humid, had a nice breeze and didn’t in fact rain. Until this morning that is.
So, unless the rain stops this morning, I am snookered in terms of riding today. Hence the title of my blog. Thinking I had today to ride, I wasn’t worried and was quite willing to put off yesterday’s plan until today.
How does this relate to business? Well it does quite easily. You have a job for a client that will be time-consuming or just plain boring. You have a relatively long deadline so why not put it off? You can surely work on many other things and come back to it later. Or maybe not. All of a sudden, it is the day before the deadline and you haven’t even started. So much for procrastination.
If I had just gone for a short ride, I wouldn’t be suffering pangs of guilt right now. The same with deadlines at work. Even picking up the job to review it and make a plan for completion will keep it moving forward. The boring jobs that pay well are the hardest to keep motivated about. Because of that, procrastinating is probably the worst choice to make. You will resent that job/client even more and may not put your best effort into the job
Sometimes it is okay to put things off as long as you have a plan. Since I started writing this blog, the newscaster announced that the thunderstorm warning has ended. I may have lucked out today. It doesn’t happen every time so I am thankful whenever it does.
